Patriarchy and Subservience in the World Today

Posted by livininsanity on May 10, 2011

One could argue that women in certain cultures, societies and/or communities could use saving. It is no secret that in Islamic circles, women are considered subservient to men. It is also now no secret that the Brooklyn, NY, Hasidic newspaper Der Tzitung recently cropped a Whitehouse war room photo showing Hillary Clinton covering her mouth with her hand, as she watched the proceedings leading up to the assassinatino of Osama Bin Ladin, last week. The small newspaper, apparently, never prints photos of women because they may be sexually suggestive. This recent newspaper event proves something I already knew – patriarchal societies still exist all over the world. So, one could feasibly argue that many women who are stuck in subservient situations need salvation.

I’ve experienced a subservient culture first-hand. In a way, I would argue we all have, in that we’ve all felt the long-term effects of what it has ingrained in society, in women and in men. But, my experience was more immediate and direct. While visiting such a culture, I volunteered to work under a woman. At the time, I thought nothing of it. However, in retrospect, some probably viewed it as offensive. Undoubtedly, I challenged the status quo and made people think. It was not long before I was re-assigned to work with a fellow man.

A friend of mine recently derided women seeking “sugar daddies.” I’ve always been put-off by the concept also. However, within the historical concept of patriarchy, where women are subservient to men, the concept of a ‘sugar daddy’ seems almost like a natural progression. So, in a historical context, one could argue it makes sense, unfortunately. This got me to thinking about the post on “Debunking Cosmo.”

Cosmopolitan and similar women’s magazines are, in a way, extending the patriarchal notion, by telling women they need to dress, act and behave in a certain way for men, in order to be accepted. It’s now becoming easier for me to see why women buy into such notions – it is ingrained in them, historically, through the concept of patriarchy – a concept which still exists in cultures and communities throughout the World, including the United States of America.

As previously mentioned, I’ve spent time in a community where women were considered to be directly subservient to women. They were, in no way, considered equal. This extended from elder, married women to young women, to little girls. I felt bad for the young women who grew up in such a society and were stuck there. I felt an urge to “save them.” However, simultaneously, I knew I had no better place to take them to. I knew of no society, culture or community that would be ideal. I still don’t. That is sad.

Patriarchy is more veiled in the United States, but it is present. It is ingrained in media, people and their actions. So, I’m forced to ask myself, is it better to be patriarchal and be up-front about it, or, like much of “modern” society, is it better to have subliminal patriarchy? I think neither is desirable. The latter even seems more conniving, in a way. So, yes, women in proclaimed patriarchal societies need saving, but we all do.

Shaking My Head

Posted by livininsanity on June 4, 2008

Barack Obama is the Democratic Presidential Nominee, but Hillary Clinton is still… running?… for… something? …. I’m baffled and speechless, but apparently, her fervent supporters think there is something to run for.  Umm… can someone enlighten me?  Please.

I understand Barack Obama made history as the first minority Democratic Presidential Nominee, so… is HC trying to steal his thunder?  Is she a diversion of some sort?  Is she crazy?  Are her adamant supporters crazier?  I honestly don’t know.

Perhaps the tornadoes have gone to people’s heads, after all, nationally, this is the deadliest tornado season… times two.  Storms are ravaging places – I myself witnessed many, many fallen trees today and saw more non-working traffic llights today than working ones.  I don’t know if there is a correlation, but I have no other explanations.  So, please, enlighten me.

According to my Horoscope…

Posted by livininsanity on June 3, 2008

I’m doing something really productive, I’m just not aware of it at the moment.  Nice!  If only all of life were so simple.  Actually, maybe it is and I’m just not aware of it. :)

Now, on to the news of the day:  Hillary Clinton won 68% of the vote in Puerto Rico, while Barack Obama only garnered 32%.  Puerto Rico?  Are you serious?  Hillary Clinton?

I’ve made a point of not consuming any media regarding the subject matter, so I can report about this without being biased.  I want to be unfiltered so that I can present a totally original (an perhaps uneducated) viewpoint on the democratic nominee election.

Is Puerto Rico filled with old women?  Has something changed that I’m not aware of?  Oh, wait a minute, I think the culprit here might be Bill Clinton – all those hot Puerto Rican mamis want their shot with Bill in the oval office.  It’s the only solution I can feasibly derive at.  Well, that or the chicanos (I hope that’s close enough to a slang term for male Puerto Ricans) think adultery runs in the family.  But, Hillary Clinton?  Well, there is Chelsea.  Maybe, this is more of a long term strategy – waiting for the day Chelsea can take office.

Now, if only these Presidential type families had more children, we could return to the days of keeping one family in power forever.  Ah, nostalgia.  Just what we need – a return to yesteryear.

On the other hand, perhaps Hillary Clinton’s doing something productive and I’m just not aware of it.  I wish.

Signs You’ve Stayed in a Democratic Presidential Primary Race Too Long

Posted by livininsanity on May 19, 2008

On Tuesday, May 20th, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will vie for votes in the Kentucky Democratic Primary.  In honor of the event, I have put together a list of sorts:

Signs You’ve Stayed in a Democratic Presidential Primary Race Too Long

1) Everyone is discussing potential vice presidential runningmates for your opponent.

1a) And you are not one of them.

2) People are equally as likely to laugh at the mention of your name as they are to provide positive comments

3) You have no mathematical chance of winning the Democratic Nomination for President

4) People have forgotten you’re still running

5) You’re making a complete fool of yourself

6) You’ve been digging into your own pockets for months in order to support your campaign because, well, the rest of the country is not willing to waste thier money anymore

7) You used to be unfathomably wealthy and you’re well on your way to being broke (due to number 6)

May Day

Posted by livininsanity on May 1, 2008

The NFL Draft is over, the Washington Redskins acquired a wealth of offensive talent, Jeremiah Wright is one amusing dude, Barack Obama has parted ways from the reverend, Miley Cyrus appeared scanitly clad in Vanity Fair and Hillary Clinton insists on taking Barack Obama to the ropes, as super delegates decide the next democratic presidential nominee.
Boston Legal is still a great show that addresses important and relevant current event issues and the LOST is on tonight, for the second week in a row with a new LOST episode. As if all that wasn’t enough, May is here, and as such, so is Mind-reading Awareness Month. Good times indeed.
Oh, did I mention one of my bosses tried to bribe me? While bribes are generally great to recieve, they are usually an indication of something else that is lacking. In the instance of a job, one might think a bribe could be an indication that a larger salary, a promotion or added benefits (such as vacation time) are required. But, I digresss, because Lost is about to come and it is, afterall, the best show on television, even though Boston Legal is also great. Gotta give some shout outs to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report also.

Thoughts on Reverend Jeremiah Wright

Posted by livininsanity on April 30, 2008

If nothing else, Reverend Jeremiah Wright is amusing.  Some people claim he is offensive.  To those people, I say, “your offense offends me.”  Granted, sometimes he doesn’t say things in the most politically correct way, but, if nothing else, Reverend Jeremiah Wright is amusing.  Seriously, did you see him do a little dance, make a little love and get down with Wright, Reverend Wright, Jeremiah Wright.

This guy, who has been cast into the limelight for being associated with Barack Obama, does impressions of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson, residents of the United Kingdom and who knows how many other people.  So, you may not agree with some of what he says – it’s called FREE SPEECH.  I think it’s written somewhere in a little paper called the Constitution.

The sad thing, in my opinion, is that the ties to Barack Obama remind me of the swift scandal during the Presidential Campaign of John F. Kerry.  I think it would be utterly sad if people base there votes for President based on such an association.  Hillary Clinton may not have any associates who are publicly as utterly amusing (or offensive according to some) as Barack Obama, but I don’t see that as a reason to not vote for Barack Obama.

Now, if only Reverend Jeremiah Wright would focus his energy on May being Mind-reader Awareness Month – the entire country would become aware instantaneously, so it seems.
