I Love the DMV – Psych!

Posted by livininsanity on May 10, 2008

I arrive early to the DMV – before they open – so I wouldn’t have to spend too much time at the black hole that is the Department of Motor Vehicles. About an hour and fifteen minutes after they opened, my number was called. Unfortunately, there was a computer reporting snaffu, leading me down a path of phone calls on a cell phone with a dying battery.

After finally acquiring the fax necessary to fix the snaffu, I was sent to window number five. However, as it turns out, window number five was not the correct window. “Thank you for visiting window number five. Although you were instructed to visit this window by someone at window number two, it is not the correct window. Please move on to window number six.”

So, there I am, at window number six, finally making some progress. Before I knew it, I was passed on to the window without a number. And, shortly thereafter, I was walking out the door. As I strutted into the parking lot, with an air of arrogance for defeating the DMV, I remembered I forgot something. So, I returned to the unnumbered window. (Yes, straight to the head of the line – no more collecting numbers and waiting for me.) So, I was given a form to fill out and told I could circumvent any further waits by going through the drive thru. Sweet. Form-filled out, drive thru here I come….

When the Department of Motor Vehicles drive thru teller told me I needed to return inside…. back to the illustrious window number six, as a matter of fact. Although, not until I collected another number and waited breifly. (Seriously, it was only briefly this time.) Upon approaching window number six, the woman behind the desk commented, “Haven’t I already seen you today?”

Indeed. I visited window number two, window number five, window number six TWICE, the unnumbered window and the drive thru. Fun fun. But, alas, this trip to window number six proved to be my last trip to any window at the DMV and in a mere 2 hours and 40 minutes, I finally walked out of the DMV for good. Now, I just need to figure out how to avoid that black hole for the rest of my life.

  1. The DMV sure does seem to have wasting time down to an art.

  2. Practice makes perfect, I suppose.
